The Pavilion at Cheesman Park is one of Denver's most quietly stunning landmarks. Built in 1907 using marble quarried from the Crystal River near Redstone, Colorado, the Greek neoclassical colonnade was donated to the city by the family of Denver pioneer Walter S. Cheesman and dedicated in 1910. Once called Denver's "Temple in the Sun," it anchors one of the most beautiful urban parks in the city — a park that, beneath its serene surface, sits on the grounds of one of Denver's earliest cemeteries.

Karl Christian Krumpholz captured the Pavilion in March 2020 — the long colonnaded facade, the reflecting pool and fountains at its base, and the surrounding trees in his signature blue, gold, and ink palette. It's one of his most peaceful and expansive compositions, a departure from the neon and grit of Colfax that shows the full range of his eye for the city. Karl Christian Krumpholz is a Denver-based cartoonist and illustrator best known for his documentary-style urban sketches and the acclaimed comic series 30 Miles of Crazy! and The Denver Bootleg. Originally from the East Coast, Karl has spent over a decade capturing the fleeting architecture, neon signs, and gritty characters of Denver — especially along the legendary Colfax Avenue. His book Queen City was a History Finalist in the 2022 Colorado Book Awards.
