The Landmark Mayan Theatre at 110 South Broadway is one of Denver's most beloved and distinctive buildings. Designed by architect Montana Fallis and opened in 1930, it's one of only three surviving Art Deco Mayan Revival-style theaters in the entire country — a stunning blend of ancient Mesoamerican motifs and 1930s cinema glamour. Saved from demolition in 1984, it's been home to independent film, art house cinema, and one of the best neon marquees in the city ever since.
Karl Christian Krumpholz captures the Mayan's iconic facade in this illustration — the ornate vertical signage, the glowing marquee, and the architectural detail that makes this building impossible to walk past without stopping. About the Artist:
Karl Christian Krumpholz is a Denver-based cartoonist and illustrator best known for his documentary-style urban sketches and the acclaimed comic series 30 Miles of Crazy! and The Denver Bootleg. Originally from the East Coast, Karl has spent over a decade capturing the fleeting architecture, neon signs, and gritty characters of Denver — especially along the legendary Colfax Avenue. His book Queen City was a History Finalist in the 2022 Colorado Book Awards.
