The Lion's Lair at 2022 East Colfax Avenue is Denver's version of CBGB's — a gritty, legendary dive bar and music venue that's been part of the city's punk, rock, and underground music scene since the 1990s. The space itself dates back to the 1930s, when it was known as The Playboy Club. Today it's one of the last true music dives on Colfax, where bands from all over play sweaty sets to crowds who actually care about the music.
Karl Christian Krumpholz captured the Lion's Lair as part of his iconic 2020 East Colfax banner series — a set of illustrations of historic and iconic Colfax landmarks that hung along the street that year. The result is one of his most striking pieces: the purple and gold facade, the ornate lion head logo, and that unmistakable sign rendered in his bold, detailed style. About the Artist:
Karl Christian Krumpholz is a Denver-based cartoonist and illustrator best known for his documentary-style urban sketches and the acclaimed comic series 30 Miles of Crazy! and The Denver Bootleg. Originally from the East Coast, Karl has spent over a decade capturing the fleeting architecture, neon signs, and gritty characters of Denver — especially along the legendary Colfax Avenue. His book Queen City was a History Finalist in the 2022 Colorado Book Awards.
